Case Study
Like a mythical phoenix, Banff Mt. Norquay’s proud new Cascade Lodge arose out of the ashes of a devastating fire which destroyed this famous ski resort’s previous lodge in December 1995.
Normerica’s Challenge:
Client had a very limited time period available for design and construction to replace the previous ski lodge before Christmas break. On-site construction had to begin no later than the end of July 1996. The resort’s marketing strategy required the new building to be a timber frame structure in harmony with the natural surroundings.
Normerica’s Solution:
In collaboration with Mt. Norquay’s management and local Architect John Novotny, the team quickly developed a conceptual design. Normerica’s Construction Management personnel guaranteed the overall range of construction costs from the conceptual design sketches, which were accepted by the owner. Then, Normerica’s Design and Engineering Department prepared the construction drawings and structural engineering, we manufactured the building shell, we erected the shell and we provided supervision for the overall construction of the new 24,300 sq.ft. day-lodge, featuring Normerica’s world-renowned timber frame building system.
The lodge boasts 30 ft. vertical windows in three large gables, pub, restaurant and 170-seat capacity conference room. An expansive 9,397 sq.ft. outdoor deck runs along the face of the building.
